The Mystery and Peril Of Social Networking Sites
Posted by Greg Writer on March 16, 2007
Social networking sites are mushrooming. There is now even a site called Ning.com which allows you to create your very own social networking site. Some of the sites that people have recently created on Ning.com are “Connoisseurs of Micobrews,” which has 193 members; “PezHeads” which has 12 members; and “Map Librarians,” which also has 12 members. (I am not kidding.)
I might like to have my own social networking site, but I have a confession: I am not really sure what a social networking site is. What are they for? What do the do? Why are they different than simply sending instant messages or e-mails to a group of friends? Dear reader, if you could let me in on what this latest and hottest thing is, I would greatly appreciate it. Simply give me your thoughts in the comments section of this blog.
Despite my ignorance, I do know that social networking sites present perils to kids. Kids could post information on them that should be kept private, for example. So, before allowing your kids to use a social networking site, take a look at an article entitled “Social Networking Safety Tips.” (Even after reading that article, it probably would be best not to let your kids join “Connoisseurs of Micobrew.”)
If you want even more information on social networking sites (here comes the plug), there is a free Ebook on this subject that is currently offered with every purchase of SnoopStick at www.mykidsinternetsafety.com.
Perhaps I could create a social networking site on the meaning and implications of social networking sites in modern American life. Any takers?
